Once upon a time in the vibrant city of Bikini Bottom….I mean Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts was abuzz with excitement as the 2023/2024 Slow Burn Theatre Company Season, presented by American National Bank.
The stage is set for an extraordinary musical experience with the bold and original production of The SpongeBob Musical, featuring a legendary roster of Grammy® Award winners, including Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, and John Legend. Adapted from the beloved Nickelodeon series, the musical brought to life the iconic characters of SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, and the entire Bikini Bottom community, who faced an imminent threat of annihilation. However, in a heartwarming twist, an unexpected hero emerged, showcasing the remarkable power of optimism and resilience, ultimately saving the world. The musical, hailed as “effervescent candy for the spirit” by New York Magazine, captured the essence of the iconic series created by Stephen Hillenburg.
The SpongeBob Musical: Saturday, June 8 through Sunday, June 23
Since its debut in 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants had become a cultural phenomenon, spawning a universe of beloved characters, memorable catchphrases, and enduring memes, as well as theatrical releases and consumer products. The SpongeBob Musical itself received an impressive 12 Tony Award nominations, solidifying its place as the most nominated musical of the 2017-2018 theatre season.
Notably, it was named Outstanding Musical by the Drama Desk Awards and received accolades for Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Score from the Outer Critics Circle. The musical’s captivating production, conceived by Tina Landau, featured a book by Kyle Jarrow and original songs by a star-studded lineup including Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, and many more.
The talented cast, led by Anthony Llerandi as SpongeBob, will deliver a remarkable performance, bringing this beloved story to life on stage. Under the direction of Slow Burn Theatre Artistic Director Patrick Fitzwater and a creative team including choreographer Reynel Reynaldo and music director Eden Marte, the musical will unfold with vibrant energy and captivating performances. The technical team, with scenic designer Timothy Dickey, costume designer Rick Peña, and lighting designer Clifford Spulock, bring the colorful world of Bikini Bottom to life with their remarkable artistry.

(March 29 – April 13); and The Bodyguard The Musical (June 7 – 22).
