Review: ‘The Wiz’ Eases on Down the Road to the Arsht Center with Joy and Soul

The 50th Anniversary national tour of “The Wiz,” recently lighting up the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center, is an absolute triumph—a fresh, vibrant, and utterly joyous revival that proves why this groundbreaking musical remains a cultural phenomenon. This production isn’t just a trip down the yellow brick road; it’s an electrifying flight of imagination fueled by powerhouse performances and visionary design.

From the moment the show opens, you’re swept away by a production that feels both retro and boldly futuristic. Director Schele Williams and choreographer JaQuel Knight (known for his work with Beyoncé) have infused the classic material with a modern, Afrofuturistic flavor, giving the show a pulsating, high-intensity energy. The choreography is particularly stunning—a dynamic blend of contemporary fusion and high-energy dance that is executed flawlessly by the talented ensemble.

Dana Cimone shines as a strong, clear-voiced Dorothy who projects both ingratiating optimism and natural leadership as she gathers her tribe. The seekers she meets—the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion—are equally fantastic, bringing both comedy and sincerity to their iconic roles. The cast’s vocal ability is truly exceptional, delivering Charlie Smalls’ iconic score (packed with soul, R&B, and ’70s funk) with incredible range and emotion. The stirring number “Everybody Rejoice” is a genuine showstopper that leaves the audience cheering.

Adding to the visual feast is the production’s sophisticated staging. Academy Award-winning Scenic Designer Hannah Beachler and Video Designer Daniel Brodie utilize high-caliber video projections and set pieces that transform the stage into a constantly moving, rich universe—from swirling storm clouds to the psychedelic tones of the poppy fields.

This revival is more than just entertainment; it’s a vital, celebratory experience. Especially meaningful for Miami audiences were the South Florida natives in the cast, lending a local heartbeat to this cultural event. The Wiz is a production overflowing with Black joy, community, and heart, reminding us all that we already possess everything we need within ourselves. If you missed it, you missed a historic and magical night of theater.
